A pickleball set is a bundle of two or four paddles plus balls, and usually a carry bag, sold together so you can start playing right away. For most new players, a two-paddle set with a fiberglass or composite face, a polymer honeycomb core, a midweight paddle (about 7.3 to 8.0 ounces), a medium grip (about 4 1/4 inches) and a mix of indoor and outdoor balls is the right place to start. On retailer pages in October 2026, basic sets started around $30, good beginner sets from known brands ran about $65 to $80, brand-name graphite and carbon sets ran about $90 to $130, and sets with a net cost about $200 to $350. This guide explains what to look for and lists real sets at each price, with the retailer and the price we saw on October 27, 2026. Prices change often, so check before you buy. We did not test these sets; the details come from the product pages.

What comes in a pickleball set
- Paddles. Two is standard. Four-paddle sets cover a full doubles game. A few net kits include four.
- Balls. Anywhere from 2 to 6. Check whether they are indoor balls, outdoor balls or both. Many cheaper sets ship outdoor balls only.
- A bag. Usually a mesh drawstring bag or a sling bag. Some higher-priced sets include a backpack or hard case.
- Extras. Some sets add overgrips (thin wraps over the handle) or paddle covers.
- A net (only in net kits). A portable net with a frame, usually in a carry case. These cost far more than paddle-only sets.
How to choose a pickleball set
1. Paddle face material
| Face | Feel | Weight | Typical sets |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wood | Solid, little touch | Heavy, often 9.5 oz and up | Cheapest sets and kids' sets |
| Aluminum | Hard, little touch | Heavy, often around 10.5 to 11 oz | Budget sets |
| Fiberglass (composite) | Lively, easy power | Midweight | Most $30 to $80 sets |
| Graphite | Firm, crisp, good control | Light to midweight | $80 to $150 sets |
| Carbon fiber | Controlled, more grip on the ball | Light to midweight | $80 and up |
For a first set, fiberglass, graphite or carbon over a polymer core is what most players end up with. Wood and aluminum sets are cheap and durable but heavy, which tires the arm over a long session.
2. Core
Most modern paddles use a polymer (plastic) honeycomb core. Core thickness is listed in millimeters, usually 10 to 16 mm. Brands generally describe thicker cores (14 to 16 mm) as softer and more controlled, and thinner cores (10 to 13 mm) as livelier with more pop. Beginners usually find a thicker core more forgiving at the net.
3. Paddle weight
USA Pickleball sets no limit on paddle weight (Rule 3.D.3 of the 2026 rulebook). Pickleball.com describes lightweight paddles as under 7.3 oz, midweight as 7.3 to 8.0 oz and heavyweight as over 8.0 oz. Lighter paddles are quicker at the net and easier on the arm; heavier paddles give more power and stability but tire you out sooner. Pickleball Central suggests about 7 to 7.6 oz for many players over 50. A midweight paddle is the safest first choice.
4. Grip size
Grip size is the distance around the handle. Pickleball Central lists small grips at about 4 inches, medium at about 4 1/4 to 4 3/8 inches, and large at about 4 1/2 inches. The sets below range from 4 1/8 to about 4 5/8 inches. If you are between sizes, go smaller: you can build a grip up with an overgrip, but you cannot make it thinner.
5. Indoor vs outdoor balls
| Outdoor ball | Indoor ball | |
|---|---|---|
| Holes | About 40, smaller | About 26 to 30, larger |
| Plastic | Thicker and harder | Softer |
| Play | Heavier, faster, less affected by wind; more likely to crack | Lighter, slower, bouncier, easier to control |
| Use on | Concrete, asphalt and outdoor courts | Gym floors and indoor courts |
Ball details are from Selkirk's ball guide. The 2026 USA Pickleball rulebook says all approved balls are acceptable for indoor or outdoor play (Rule 3.C.1), and that larger-hole balls are customarily used indoors and smaller-hole balls outdoors. So a set with the "wrong" ball is still legal, but buy the type your courts use.
6. USA Pickleball approval
For casual play, any paddle works. For sanctioned tournaments, the paddle must be on the USA Pickleball approved paddle list and carry the "USA Pickleball Approved" seal or text (Rule 3.D.1). Most sets from $40 up say they are approved; check the list if you plan to enter events. One set below (the JOOLA Agassi/Graf pack) says on its own page that its paddles are not eligible for USA Pickleball competitions as of May 1, 2026.
7. Two paddles or four
Two paddles are enough for a couple, or for singles. Four paddles let you host a doubles game without anyone bringing gear, which is useful for families and new groups. A four-paddle set often costs less than two two-paddle sets.

$150 and up (sets with a net)
| Set | In the box | Price seen (where) |
|---|---|---|
| Baden Champions Series Pickleball Set | 4 wood paddles, 3 balls, 22 ft steel-frame net, bag | $199.99 (Dick's Sporting Goods) |
| PICKLE-BALL Essentials Set | Tournament net with case, 2 Heritage paddles (graphite face, 13 mm polypropylene honeycomb, 7.4 to 7.9 oz), 4 outdoor 40-hole balls | $219.99 (Pickleball Central) |
| Lifetime Pro Pickleball Set | 4 paddles, 3 outdoor and 1 indoor ball, regulation net with fiberglass poles | $349.99 (Dick's Sporting Goods) |
What to know: buy a net set only if you will play where there is no net, such as a driveway, a gym or a tennis court. The Baden set covers four players with wood paddles; the PICKLE-BALL set pairs a tournament net with two better paddles. For setting up your own court, see pickleball court dimensions.
Set or single paddle?
If you are buying for yourself and already play often, one good paddle in the $80 to $150 range can be a better buy than a set. Sets make the most sense when two or more people are starting together, when you want spare paddles for friends, or when you are giving a gift. Many groups also have loaner paddles, so it is fine to play a few times before buying anything. If you are brand new, start with how to play pickleball for beginners.
What else to buy with a set
- Court shoes. The one thing not to skip. See our pickleball accessories guide.
- Eye protection. Impact-rated glasses start under $10. See pickleball glasses.
- Extra balls of the type your courts use. Outdoor balls crack over time.
- Overgrips if the grip is too thin or gets slippery.
Common mistakes when buying a pickleball set
- Buying the cheapest heavy set for regular play. Wood and aluminum paddles over 10 oz are fine for the backyard but tiring for weekly games.
- Ignoring the ball type. Playing outdoors with indoor balls, or the other way around, changes how the game plays.
- Assuming every set is tournament-legal. Check the approved paddle list if you plan to enter events.
- Paying for a net you do not need. Most public courts have permanent nets.
- Picking a grip that is too big. Too big is harder to fix than too small.
- Trusting a "was" price. Several sets above show large markdowns. Compare the price you pay with similar sets, not with the crossed-out number.
For the player who just got their first set
We make pickleball gifts, and a few pair well with a new set:
- For carrying the new paddles and balls: the Paddle Packed, Plans Cancelled Tote Bag ($28) or 40 Holes of Happiness Tote Bag ($28).
- For the court bag: the 40 Holes of Happiness Towel ($28), a 16 x 28 in hand towel.
- For the new player who is already hooked: the Officially a 3.0, Emotionally a 5.0 T-Shirt ($27), a cotton casual tee rather than performance wear.

Frequently asked questions
What comes in a pickleball set?
Usually two or four paddles, two to six balls and a carry bag. Some add overgrips or covers, and net kits add a portable net.
How much should I pay for a pickleball set?
In October 2026, good beginner sets from known brands were about $65 to $80 on retailer pages, basic sets started around $30, and sets with a net ran about $200 to $350.
What is the best pickleball set for beginners?
Look for midweight fiberglass, graphite or carbon paddles (about 7.3 to 8.0 oz) with a polymer core, a medium grip, and both indoor and outdoor balls. Sets in the $40 to $80 range usually check all of those boxes.
Are cheap pickleball sets USA Pickleball approved?
Some are, some are not. Approval only matters for sanctioned tournaments. Look for the "USA Pickleball Approved" seal or check the approved paddle list.
Is a set of 4 pickleball paddles worth it?
Yes if you want to host doubles games or play as a family. A four-pack often costs less per paddle than two two-packs.
Do I need indoor or outdoor balls?
Match your courts: outdoor balls (about 40 smaller holes) for outdoor courts, indoor balls (about 26 to 30 larger holes) for gyms. All approved balls are legal either way under Rule 3.C.1.
Do pickleball sets come with a net?
Most do not. Net kits are sold separately or as larger sets, usually starting around $200.
Wood or fiberglass pickleball paddles?
Fiberglass for regular play. Wood paddles are cheap and tough but heavy, which makes them better for kids, beaches and backyards.
