Yes. A pickleball court (20 by 44 feet) fits inside a tennis court (36 by 78 feet for doubles) with room to spare. For a quick game, lower the tennis net's center strap to 34 inches and tape a pickleball court in the middle, using the tennis center service line as your centerline. The pickleball baseline lands about a foot behind the tennis service line. For more than one court, or a net at exact pickleball height, bring portable pickleball nets. Ask whoever runs the courts before you lower a net or put down tape.
Quick answer: pickleball court vs tennis court
| Pickleball | Tennis | |
|---|---|---|
| Court length | 44 ft | 78 ft |
| Court width | 20 ft (singles and doubles) | 27 ft singles, 36 ft doubles |
| Court area | 880 sq ft | 2,808 sq ft (doubles) |
| Net to baseline | 22 ft | 39 ft |
| Front line | Kitchen line, 7 ft from the net | Service line, 21 ft from the net |
| Net height, center | 34 in | 36 in |
| Net height, ends | 36 in at the sidelines | 42 in at the posts |
| Recommended space around the court | Playing surface at least 30 x 60 ft; 34 x 64 ft for new courts | For club play, at least 18 ft behind each baseline and 10 ft beside each sideline (about 56 x 114 ft overall) |

Option 1: one court under the tennis net
This is the fastest way to play, and the tennis lines do half the measuring for you.
Where the pickleball lines go
Center the pickleball court on the tennis net and on the tennis center service line. Then:
| Pickleball line | Where it goes on a tennis court |
|---|---|
| Centerline | On top of the tennis center service line. The tennis line runs from the net to 21 ft; the pickleball centerline runs from 7 ft to 22 ft, so you only add about a foot at the back. |
| Kitchen line | 7 ft from the net, on each side, across 20 ft |
| Baseline | 22 ft from the net, which is about 1 ft behind the tennis service line |
| Sidelines | 10 ft each side of the center service line, which is about 3.5 ft inside each tennis singles sideline |
Pickleball measurements are made to the outside edges of the lines (Rule 3.A.2), and the tennis lines have their own widths, so treat the "about" figures as close, and measure from the net with a tape.
What you need
- A tape measure of at least 25 feet.
- Tape or chalk that the court owner allows. Pickleball lines are 2 inches wide and should clearly stand out from the surface (Rule 3.A.4.e), so pick a color different from the tennis lines.
- Permission. Painting lines, or even taping them, on a court you do not own is up to the owner.
Setting the net
Loosen the tennis net's center strap until the top of the net measures 34 inches at the center (Rule 3.B.7). Then check the height where the net crosses each pickleball sideline. A pickleball net is 36 inches there (Rule 3.B.6), and a tennis net, which runs 42 inches high at posts 21 feet from the center, may not match. For a casual game it is usually close enough; for an exact net, use a portable pickleball net. Put the strap back to 36 inches when you finish, so the next tennis players find it as they expect.
Limits of this setup
- You get one pickleball court per tennis net.
- The tennis posts stand far outside the pickleball sidelines, so there is room to hit around the post, which is legal (Rule 13.C), but the net extends well beyond the court on each side.
- Some facilities may not want their tennis nets lowered, even for an hour.
Option 2: portable nets and more than one court
With portable pickleball nets, you can set up courts anywhere on the tennis surface, at exact pickleball height, without touching the tennis net. Look for a net that sets up to 36 inches at the sides and 34 at the center, and is at least 21 feet 9 inches wide (Rules 3.B.3, 3.B.6 and 3.B.7).
How many pickleball courts fit on a tennis court?
It depends on how much paved space is inside the fence, not on the tennis lines. Here is the math with each organization's own numbers:
| Space | Size | Area |
|---|---|---|
| One pickleball court, lines only | 20 x 44 ft | 880 sq ft |
| One pickleball court, minimum playing surface | 30 x 60 ft | 1,800 sq ft |
| Four pickleball courts at the minimum, in a 2 by 2 block | 60 x 120 ft | 7,200 sq ft |
| Tennis doubles court, lines only | 36 x 78 ft | 2,808 sq ft |
| Tennis court with ITF minimum club run-off (18 ft behind, 10 ft beside) | about 56 x 114 ft | about 6,384 sq ft |
So four pickleball courts, each with USA Pickleball's minimum playing surface, need a 60 by 120 foot area. A tennis court with more room than the ITF's club-play minimum around it can hold four. One built to just that minimum is a few feet short in each direction, so two courts with full run-off, or four with less room behind and beside each court, is what fits. A court builder listed on USA Pickleball's site advertises converting one tennis court into 2 to 4 pickleball courts, which matches this range.
Laying out four courts
- Measure the paved area inside the fence, not just the tennis lines.
- Divide it into four equal rectangles, two across and two along the length of the tennis court.
- Center a 20 by 44 foot court in each rectangle, with the long side running the same way as the tennis court, so all four nets run parallel to the tennis net.
- Keep the tennis net out of play. With four courts, the tennis net sits between the two rows of pickleball courts, so check that each pickleball baseline still has room behind it before the tennis net or posts.
- Use a different tape color for each pair of courts if the lines get confusing.
Permanent pickleball lines on a tennis court
Some tennis courts have pickleball lines painted permanently in a second color. If you are asking a park or club for them, the numbers in this guide are the ones a court painter needs: 20 by 44 foot courts, 2-inch lines, a 7-foot kitchen, and at least 30 by 60 feet of playing surface per court (Rules 3.A.1, 3.A.3, 3.A.4.c and 3.A.4.e). USA Pickleball and the American Sports Builders Association publish a construction and maintenance manual for builders. Outdoors, USA Pickleball recommends north-south courts, so players are not looking into a low sun.
Playing tips on a tennis court
- Watch the extra lines. Tennis lines inside your pickleball court mean nothing for pickleball. Agree before you start which color is yours.
- The tennis service line is a handy guide. Your baseline is just behind it, so serves that land near the tennis service line are deep, legal serves.
- Bring the right balls. Any USA Pickleball approved ball is legal indoors or out; balls with smaller holes are customarily used outdoors (Rule 3.C.1 and Figure 3-2).
For the player who learned on a tennis court
We make pickleball gifts. Two designs fit anyone who plays pickleball on tennis courts:
- For the former tennis player who now shows up with a portable net: Tennis Was a Phase T-Shirt ($27) or embroidered hat ($32).
- For the player who taped the lines and knows the numbers: the 44 x 20 Court Hat ($32) or T-shirt ($27).
Frequently asked questions
Can you play pickleball on a tennis court?
Yes. Tape a 20 by 44 foot court in the middle and lower the tennis net to 34 inches at the center, or set up portable pickleball nets. Get the owner's permission first.
How many pickleball courts fit on one tennis court?
Two to four, depending on the paved area inside the fence. Four courts at USA Pickleball's 30 by 60 foot minimum playing surface need 60 by 120 feet (Rule 3.A.3).
Can you use a tennis net for pickleball?
For casual play, yes. Lower the center strap so the net is 34 inches at the center. A pickleball net is also 36 inches at its sidelines, and a tennis net may not match that, so use a portable net if you want exact height (Rules 3.B.6 and 3.B.7).
How much lower is a pickleball net than a tennis net?
2 inches lower at the center (34 vs 36 inches) and 6 inches lower at the ends (36 inches at the pickleball sidelines vs 42 at the tennis posts). More in pickleball net height vs tennis net height.
What tape do you use for pickleball lines on a tennis court?
Whatever the court owner allows that comes off cleanly. The rulebook asks for 2-inch lines in a color that clearly stands out from the court (Rule 3.A.4.e), so pick a color different from the tennis lines.
How big is a tennis court compared with a pickleball court?
A tennis doubles court is 36 by 78 feet, or 2,808 square feet. A pickleball court is 20 by 44 feet, or 880 square feet, a little less than a third of the size.
Can you play tennis on a pickleball court?
Not a real game. A pickleball court is 44 feet long and a tennis court is 78, so the tennis service boxes alone (21 feet from the net) would nearly fill one side of a pickleball court.
